KIRBY KNOB BOYS – “The Mighty Saguaro” Now if you didn’t know what a Saguaro is, then you wouldn’t understand the picture on the cover of the latest “awesome” offering from Kirby Knob Boys and how it relates to Bluegrass. A Saguaro is a giant (up to 50 feet tall) prickly flowering cactus that produces juicy fruit, and not unlike the Saguaro, are the Kirby Knob Boys out of Kentucky, who offers offers up a juicy blend of Bluegrass! It will tickle the tastes of traditional ‘grass lovers and others! I was happy to discover a new group I hadn’t heard of as of yet, and to find out they have so much going for them, in harmony, picking and songwriting – WOW! I love it when I find a band that has a sound that instinctively draws me to it. The Kirby Boys have that sound!
A family of Millers, from the great Bluegrass State of Kentucky, Doug (hot on the mandolin), Larry (the heartbeat bass), Rick (do it all banjo, guitar and vocals wow!) and Doug’s son Anthony (great guitar, super vocals) make a pretty impressive project with The Mighty Saguaro, when they strike up their band with friend Danny Caldwell (delectable dobro and guitar). I really can honestly say I enjoy their fresh take on our beloved genre and they definitely should be recognized by the Bluegrass community! Definitely something to look forward to in an up and coming band with tunes to inspire in a delightful harmonious sound. The very distinctive voices blend easily and creatively with their original arrangements and make this band for me. an exciting discovery.
The tunes in this project are: I Wanna Go Home, I'll Never Give Up On You, The Mornin' Light, (real nice) If I Were An Eagle (awesome), Life On The Delta, (Prime Cut single – exceptional!) All Because Of You, The Sugar Mill, The Mighty Saguaro, (great!)Written On The Page, California CottonFields, Dirty Old Town, (one of my early favorites and still is – gets stuck in my head all day – if I hear it!!) Hickory Wind, Seven Bridges Road, The Legend Of The Rebel Soldier and Out Among The Stars. Nothing to complain about anywhere here – its all great!
A single Life on the Delta came out on Prime Cuts last September (08)and has been receiving favorable comments. I wish to soon receive their previous recordings for comparison. I have no doubt, I’ll find other delectable tunes juiced out of this from the Kirby Knob Boys. A “mighty” offering – is “The Mighty Saguaro” – check those boys from Kentucky, out

KKB are always real good.
Dan Awender & Linda Axman, CKWR
Nice cover version‐ love the "raw" sound of the playing and the vocals. I've already featured the entire CD on radio.
Rein Wortelboer, Radio Venray / Radio Huissentv

Ed Stiner, WJFC
Good old bluegrass tradition.
Wayne Bledsoe, KMST
After a set of sound‐alike bluegrass songs, this tune will spice up a radio show with its clever lyrics and its understated presentation. Not a lot of glitz here, but it is a refreshing and novel listening experience.
Carl Anthony, KZUM
I can almost see the town Anthony is singing about. Love the song. It's easy and entertaining. The banjo really stands out. Nice job!
